WAMX State Championships

Well time has flown by, but I went up to Coastal Park in Henderson to shoot the 1st Round of the WAMX State Championships.

I just love shooting motorcross, but Coastal Park was quite challenging. The track itself is quite compact and easy to get around, but that is a little part of the problem, you have to watch your back, as you do in any motorsport, but you seem to find yourself pretty close to the action at this track. And plenty of action there was.

The first open moto went to last years state champion Louis Calvin, you had a tough battle with Dean Porter. The 2nd moto saw Calvin get the holeshot, only to have the race restarted after a 4 bike pile-up over a jump, with two bikes proving difficult to pull apart. Chris Errey got the holeshot on the restart, but Porter headed the pack and checked out for an easy win. The third pro open moto saw Calvin with the holeshot again, and seemed to get out to a handy lead, only to have Porter keep Calvin in his sights. With two laps to go Calvin had some extremely bad luck, with some wire getting caught in his rear wheel, pretty much destroying it and his chances to win the day. Dean Porter finished the day on top of the podium, with Errey 2nd and Jamie Shaw 3rd.

In the Pro-Lites Robbie Clark came 1st from Josh Adams and Shaun Cornick.

In the Pro-Open Quad, Ryan Lancaster (1st), Chad McCay (2nd) and Luke Gainsford (3rd) battled it out all day on the sandy circuit which became increasingly harder to ride as the day wore on.

All in all it was a great days racing, albeit with a couple of serious injuries. The 2nd round of the WAMX State Championships is on this weekend, 8th and 9th May at Jindong Park in Busselton.
