Australasian Safari 2010

I have waited 13 months since last year for this event to happen again, and the wait is nearly over……..the 2010 Australasian Safari. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the event, it’s Australia’s version of the Dakar.

This year will see the Safari have the ceremonial start at Hillary’s Boat Harbour on Friday, 17th Sept, and from there it’s off to Southern Cross for the prologue on Saturday morning. The race then continues to Leonora, Coolgardie, Norseman and finishes in Esperance the following Saturday……..yes, AFL Grand Final Day!!!!   There will be two night stopovers in Leonora and Norseman.

This event takes the competitors through some of the toughest offroad racing conditions. Just consider this, you are travelling at warp speed (up to 170kmh….pants browning stuff!!!) on tracks you have never ridden before. You are reading a map at the same time, and this is a huge part of this event, a navigational error can cost you big time. It is a huge mental and physical challenge, as well as the mechanical side of things. It is the ultimate test for both rider and machine.

The most important part of the Safari is the support crews. Without the efforts of these tireless people, from the event organisers and officials to the teams and support staff, it wouldn’t be possible for these events to run. This year I will be travelling with the CPW Team.

Don McGrath owns Cycle Products West (CPW). CPW manufactures in WA complete Safari kits to suit KTM under the CPW Motoparts brand, and also a number of parts for specific Safari applications to suit other brands – switchgear etc.

CPW’s involvement in the Australasian Safari goes back to 2007 – 08, where they supported Team KTM  with logistics. They also provided logistics for 1  Japanese rider and 1  Interstate rider.

2009 saw CPW run their own team. The team had success with  2nd, 4th and 14th outright placings, as well  as wins in  530+ and  450cc classes. CPW also provided logistics for 3 Japanese riders.

2010 sees CPW as the official KTM Team – The riders are Todd Smith, Ben Grabham & Matt Fish. CPW will also be supporting Ivan Erceg, Rob Lang and Heath Young. CPW will be chasing the  Outright win and Class wins in 530, 450 & 250 classes. They  will also be providing logistics for 3 Japanese riders.

Team CPW is supported by KTM, SP Tools, Motorex Oils, Safari Tanks, Force Accessories, Kustommx graphics, Motion Pro Tools, Supersprox sprockets and CPW Motoparts.

CPW also had success this year with Todd Smith 2nd outright at Finke and Matt Fish 16th outright. Smith was also 5th at Hattah.

I am proud to be involved, and also very excited. To be a part of this can become addictive, and I am an addict!!! You meet some of the most amazing people, and have an awesome time. I just can;t wait for this week of work to be over so we can get on the road.

I will hopefully update the days progress at the end of each day, and hopefully some great images. Stay tuned.

Ben Grabham will be riding with the number 3 plate, hoping to get his 3rd Safari win to go with his 07/08 wins.

Attention to detail – shows the pride in one’s work.

Many hours a day in this space to make it all happen!!!

I wish all teams and competitors in this years safari all the best, and hope everyone makes it to Esperance safely.
